Denly builds on Claydon's success

Joe Denly’s second half-century of the game and a four-wicket blast by Mitch Claydon extended Kent’s advantage over Gloucestershire by stumps on day two of the Specsavers County Championship match in Canterbury. After hitting 62 in Kent’s first innings, Denly followed with an equally vital 59 as Kent reached 118 for 4 for an emphatic overall lead of 267 going into the third day of the match.Batting for a second time by Saturday’s final session and having banked a 149-run lead, Kent suffered an early blow when Daniel Bell-Drummond prodded indeterminately at one from Liam Norwell to be caught at third slip with only three on the board.Kent’s second-wicket pairing of Denly and Joe Weatherley set out their stall to bat time for an hour, content to knock the shine off the new ball in the face of a testing examination from the likes of David Payne, Chris Liddle, Craig Miles and Norwell. With the hard work seemingly done Weatherley, on 34, wastefully chased a wide one from Norwell to edge to the keeper, but Denly dug deeper to post a second successive half-century off 92 balls and with eight fours.Denly lost his skipper Sam Northeast for 8 – off balance and aiming to leg he departed lbw to Miles – then just before stumps he threw the sink at one from Miles to snick to a jubilant Phil Mustard.Earlier, Kent mopped up seven mid-session Gloucestershire wickets for 60 runs to skittle the visitors for 149 by tea for exactly half their first-day total.Only Chris Dent’s battling three-hour innings of 67 saved the visitors from total ignominy as Claydon bagged 4 for 35 and James Harris 3 for 42 as Gloucestershire succumbed inside 60 overs.Dent, the 26-year-old Bristolian opener, laid anchor for 145 balls and fared better than most the face of some hostile, short pitched bowling from the Kent trio of Harris, Matt Coles and Claydon to take his side into the lunch break on 89 for 3.Buoyed by the break, Claydon bowled with continued pace and hostility after the resumption and was rewarded four wickets as Gloucestershire lost five wickets for 11 runs in the space of 61 deliveries.Only 15 balls after the resumption Graeme van Buuren (10) sparred off the back foot only to edge to be caught by the juggling James Tredwell at second slip, then George Hankins played over a leg stump yorker to make it 106 for 5.Six overs later, Claydon struck again to end Dent’s stoic innings. Prodding half forward the left-hander dragged the ball onto his leg stump, and, without addition to the total, Mustard edged one from Stevens low to third slip and Jack Taylor departed after feathering an airy drive to slip.David Payne and Miles added 22 runs on the counter attack before Miles nibbled one into the cordon off Harris, who then had last man Liddle caught behind via an inside edge and deflection off his front pad to end the innings and force an early tea.At the start of second day Kent struck in the third over when Harris, the on-loan seamer from Middlesex, removed night watchman Norwell lbw for 13.Fourth-wicket pairing Will Tavare and Dent rode their luck, playing and missing and surviving concerted lbw shouts against Darren Stevens and Harris, yet both stood firm to post a 50 stand by the 31st over. The partnership added 71 in 26.5 overs before Will Gidman struck in his only over of the day and moments before lunch, bowling Tavare off his pads as the right-hander aimed to work to leg.

Russell faces prospect of longer ban

Andre Russell faces the prospect of having his anti-doping ban extended to two years after the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) launched an appeal over the original sanction

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-2017Andre Russell, the West Indies allrounder, faces the prospect of having his anti-doping ban extended to two years after the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) launched an appeal over the original sanction. In January, Russell was handed a one-year ban for breaking anti-doping whereabouts regulations three times in a 12-month period which, under the code, classed as a failed test.Russell’s lawyer confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the appeal will be heard with JADCO seeking the maximum two-year penalty. Currently his ban runs until January 30, 2018.When the one-year ban was handed down, JADCO found that Russell had failed to adhere to whereabouts requirements on January 1, July 1 and July 25, 2015. His defence was that because of his cricket commitments he had left it in the hands of his agent to complete the required paperwork but the JADCO legal counsel accused him of “gross negligence”.

Newcastle Can Fix Worrying Area with "World-Class" £30m Ace

Newcastle United appear set to make it a double raid on Serie A as they look to add to the imminent arrival of Sandro Tonali by bringing in Federico Dimarco.

Widespread reports on Wednesday suggested Newcastle are increasingly confident of bringing in Tonali for a fee in the region of £60m, but the ambitious Magpies are not likely to stop there.

Newcastle transfer news – Dimarco a target for Ashworth

According to NUFC Blog, Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth has not just flown to Italy to speak to AC Milan about a deal for Tonali, but also Inter Milan regarding a move for Dimarco.

It would be quite the coup for Newcastle should they pull off the transfer, as Dimarco is a player who has been touted as a €35m (£30m) target for Real Madrid and Manchester United this summer.

The ten-cap Italy international still has three years to run on his San Siro contract, so Inter will not feel obliged to sell unless their valuation is met in full.

Where would Federico Dimarco fit in at Newcastle United?

It is no secret that Eddie Howe is after a new left-back this window to rival – or more likely replace – Dan Burn for the 2023-24 season and beyond. While Burn largely did a good job there last season, the fan favourite is not expected to start there in the Champions League next season.

Kieran Tierney had been strongly linked with a switch from Arsenal to St James' Park, but news on that front has gone quiet of late and it now appears Dimarco is Howe's favoured option.

It is clear to see why, too, as Dimarco played a big part in Inter's run to last season's Champions League final, starting ten of their 13 games – including the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in Istanbul.

Dimarco can play left-back and also left wing-back given his attacking nature, highlighted by his eight goals for Inter in all competitions last season. Indeed, The Analyst ranks the Italian in the top 2% of all defenders last term for goals scored across Europe's top five leagues last season.

No defender across Serie A, Ligue 1, LaLiga, Bundesliga and the Premier League performed better than Dimarco in terms of shots, touches in the opposition penalty box and chances created.

To put those figures into some perspective, Dimarco's 0.20 goals per 90 minutes last season, as per FBref, compares to 0.05 for Burn, who was also occasionally used at centre-back.

Dimarco assisted ten goals last season, meanwhile, whereas Burn did not set up a single goal, while the Inter defender's 2.01 shots per 90 minutes compares to 0.67 for Burn.

The former Hellas Verona loanee is also a threat in terms of his deliveries, much like Kieran Trippier on the opposite flank, earning praise from European football expert Carlo Garganese for his "world-class" crosses and set-pieces.

That is not to say Burn does not have his own qualities in other areas, and the same is true of Dimarco in terms of his weaknesses.

For example, Burn wins 2.43 aerial duels per 90 minutes, compared to 0.23 for Dimarco, while the latter is also second best in terms of tackles won (0.98 v 1.07) and blocks (0.80 v 1.21).

Ultimately, Howe must decide whether he wants to be cautious on that side of the pitch or integrate a player into the team capable of getting even more out of the likes of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson. Should he go with the latter option, this move would no doubt be bad news for their current towering full-back.

In an exciting new era at St James' Park with Champions League football set to return, Dimarco is surely the man for Howe to go for.

Arsenal Could Ditch Nketiah For "Talented" £75m Dynamo

Despite Arsenal running Manchester City close for the Premier League title, up until the final few weeks that is, Mikel Arteta will be determined to use this failure to secure silverware as motivation ahead of next season.

With Champions League football soon to be gracing the Emirates pitch for the first time since the 2016/2017 season, Arteta will be looking at improving the quality of his squad during the summer transfer window, with players required in defence, midfield, and attack if they wish to challenge domestically and in Europe.

The Gunners have recently shown interest in Chelsea forward Kai Havertz, as he looks set to depart Stamford Bridge this summer according to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian.

The German international will cost a pretty penny however, with a fee of around £75m required to complete any potential move during the transfer window and Arteta may have to move on a few players in order to balance the books to make a move possible.

One such player that could potentially make way is Eddie Nketiah, as Havertz could certainly be an upgrade on the Arsenal striker.

Could Kai Havertz replace Eddie Nketiah at Arsenal?

The Englishman scored just nine goals across 39 matches for the Gunners last term, with four coming in the Premier League and he ranked eighth for goals and assists, seventh for shots on target per game and second for big chances missed, indicating he wasn’t at his best in front of goal throughout the league campaign.

Former Gunners icon Ian Wright criticised the striker for being “very poor” during their third round FA Cup loss to Nottingham Forest in January 2022 and the £100k-per-week dud simply cannot be relied upon to score 15–20 goals a season.

Havertz on the other hand, despite a poor individual season for the forward, still scored more league goals than Nketiah, netting seven to his four, while he ranked second out of the whole Chelsea squad for goals and assists and shots on target per game, although he did rank first for big chances missed, suggesting that his composure could be worked on.

Aged just 23, the former Bayer Leverkusen whiz has still yet to reach his prime and this could be a huge bonus for Arteta, as he looks to build a squad of core players who have experience yet aren’t approaching their 30s and Havertz fits the bill.

Graham Potter dubbed him “incredibly talented” and he could go on to fulfil his attacking potential at the Emirates, especially with an attack-minded coach such as Arteta, as he has been shackled this season at Chelsea.

The fee could be a stumbling block, however, if the Stamford Bridge side bring the price down, this could surely tempt the Spaniard into a move.

Tasmania fast bowler Cameron Stevenson picked up five wickets on debut at Hurstville Oval to prevent South Australia from reaching the Matador Cup finals. Needing to win with a bonus point in order to reach the elimination final, the Redbacks were set a tall order with a target of 296 that would need to be reached inside 40 overs.South Australia did their best to ensure their tempo was up to standard, opener and captain Travis Head racing to 35 from 18 balls and Tom Cooper making 63 off 65, and gave themselves a chance if they could keep enough wickets in hand. But Stevenson claimed the wickets of Jake Weatherald and Jake Lehmann and then ran through the tail as the Redbacks were bowled out for 267 in the 39th over.Earlier, contributions from Alex Doolan (79), Dom Michael (57), Tim Paine (44) and Ben McDermott (44) pushed the Tigers to 7 for 295 from their 50 overs.Tasmania finished fifth on the tournament table and South Australia sixth, and the elimination final will now be played between New South Wales and Victoria for a place in the decider against Queensland.

Jadeja's five-for takes India Blue a step closer to Duleep title

Ravindra Jadeja’s five-wicket haul dismissed India Red for 356 and handed India Blue a first-innings lead of 337 in Greater Noida

Ravindra Jadeja’s five-wicket haul led a persistently probing bowling effort from India Blue on a day when they were made to work harder than they would have expected to plough their way through India Red’s batting line-up. That was partly down to the pitch – which offered sluggish turn, rather than the spitting variety – and partly down to sparkling fifties from Gurkeerat Singh, Stuart Binny, Amit Mishra and Kuldeep Yadav. India Red’s spirited lower-order resistance frustrated India Blue and delighted a sizeable Monday crowd, but had little impact on the broader outcome of the match as they subsided to 356, conceding a first-innings lead of 337.Jadeja consistently attacked the stumps and turned the ball past desperately groping bats. His speed through the air – averaging over 90kph – was considerably faster than that of any other spinner, denying the batsmen time to adjust to the turn. Bowling 34 overs in the day, he made good use of a sticky surface and dented India Red’s fightback with the key wickets of Gurkeerat and Binny.India Blue could have removed the lower order more swiftly if Jadeja’s fellow spinners, Parvez Rasool and Karn Sharma had been more effective. Legspinner Karn was inconsistent with his line and length, alternating patches of incisiveness with periods that were less convincing. Offspinner Rasool had a good start to the day, troubling Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh with offbreaks and straighter ones. Against the right-handers who followed, however, he was not as threatening as he might have liked. The most impressive spinners after Jadeja were the ones wielding bats. Mishra came in at 194 for 6, and was immediately kept company by nine close-in fielders. He, however, responded by lofting Jadeja back over his head for four. Mishra combined with Kuldeep for an 86-run partnership for the eighth wicket that temporarily brought the third session to life and restored some respectability to India Red’s innings. The reason respectability needed restoring was the limp showing of the India Red top order. Dhawan and Yuvraj managed some lovely drives in the first session, but those were far outnumbered by tentative pokes and speculative swishes. While they struggled most against Rasool, they ultimately perished to over-ambitious strokes against Abhimanyu Mithun and Jadeja.Dhawan, in particular, might rue his untimely indiscretion. His patchy 29 in his penultimate – possibly his last – innings before India’s first Test against New Zealand from September 22, puts him in a tight spot as India’s selectors mull which of three possible openers – M Vijay and KL Rahul are the others – to select in the playing XI.Jadeja, meanwhile, worked his way into fine rhythm in the second session, ending a 63-run stand for the fifth wicket between Gurkeerat and Binny when he dismissed Gurkeerat for 57 with a beauty that drifted into middle before turning away to hit off stump. Binny then put on 64 with Ankush Bains, before Jadeja ended that partnership too when he had Bains caught at second slip. The most decisive breakthrough, though, came minutes before the dinner break when Jadeja pitched one on leg stump and spun it away to hit Binny’s back pad in front of middle. That ended a knock that had been gaining in momentum and poise, and left Binny an agonising two runs short of a century.Mishra and Kuldeep counterattacked in the third session of the day, but Karn eventually dismissed both to end the innings. Riding on a huge lead, Gautam Gambhir and Mayank Agarwal played out the remaining two overs and headed to stumps with their side firmly in control.

West Ham: Moyes must unleash returning titan in Europe

West Ham all but secured their Premier League safety with a hard-fought and deserved 1-0 victory over Manchester United over the weekend.

It was the Irons’ ninth clean sheet of the season and Said Benrahma’s goal after a calamitous David De Gea error catapulted David Moyes’ men up to a seven-point cushion above the relegation zone.

This result means that the Hammers can turn their attention to their mouth-watering Europa Conference league semi-final against AZ Alkmaar, as they bid for their first European trophy since 1965.

Ahead of this game, Moyes provided an injury update on Kurt Zouma, who damaged his ankle in the loss to Crystal Palace back on 29 April.

The Scotsman revealed:

“Kurt has had a day back, but he is just starting back really, and we are just trying to see how his ankle is and how he is getting on. Hopefully, he is making good progress.

"It’s a good chance that it is probably too soon for tomorrow, but we will see how he feels tomorrow and make a decision based on that."

Despite a lack of clarity on his fitness, even if there is any chance he could be available, then West Ham must take the big risk on Frenchman for the biggest game of their season so far.

Why is Kurt Zouma so important for West Ham?

The centre-back has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the East Londoners, and when he has been available he has been the go-to defensive asset, starting 23 of 25 top-flight games when in the squad.

This is because the 11-cap international has registered the highest rating (6.72) of any West Ham defender, as per WhoScored.

The former Chelsea star has built a reputation for reliability, consistency, and solidity. This is also displayed by the £125k-per-week star’s rank in the top 5% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for clearances per 90, according to FBref.

Kurt-Zouma

This is followed by the fact that the 28-year-old colossus has recorded the most clearances in the Hammers team, averaging 4.8 per game.

Moyes has previously described the French titan as “commanding” and “exceptional”, and his European experience would be crucial this evening.

The Saint-Étienne prodigy spent seven years at Chelsea, having accrued appearances in the Champions League on multiple occasions and his calmness would hugely benefit his teammates.

Last season, the Irons painfully crashed out of the Europa League at this stage to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt, and Zouma’s return from injury could be the catalyst to victory.

Therefore, Moyes must take a big risk by unleashing the £30m defender at the London Stadium this evening as West Ham will surely want to carry a clean sheet into the away leg next week.

Everton Could Be Handed A Huge Injury Boost vs Crystal Palace

Everton will head to South London tomorrow afternoon for their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace and Sean Dyche could be set for a huge boost to his squad availability ahead of the game.

What's the latest on Amadou Onana's injury?

The Everton boss took to his pre-match press conference on Thursday to give a fresh update on Amadou Onana's progress in his recovery from a groin strain that saw him unavailable for selection in the defeat to Fulham at Goodison Park last weekend.

Dyche told the press:

"Ama (Onana) has made a bit more of a recovery. He was training today and we'll see how that reacts tomorrow."

Will Amadou Onana start vs Crystal Palace?

There is no doubt that the midfielder has been one of the few positives for the club since his arrival on the blue side of Merseyside last summer and his influence in the centre of the pitch has been incredibly valuable.

Over 28 Premier League appearances, the 21-year-old midfielder has scored one goal, registered one assist and created two big chances, as well as averaging one interception, 2.3 tackles, 1.1 clearances and 6.3 duels won, using his 6 foot 3 stature to effectively dominate opponents and comfortably win possession.

In fact, under Dyche's short reign at the club, the Belgian ace has played 74 minutes or more in all six of the games in which Everton have picked up points since his arrival, and in the two fixtures he hasn't featured this season, the side have lost both.

The physicality that Onana provides in midfield was something that Toffees sorely missed in the 3-1 loss to Fulham last Saturday, with James Garner and Idrissa Gana Gueye both struggling to hold off the press from their opponents in the centre of the pitch, which ultimately cost them many opportunities to take control of the game.

Since Roy Hodgson's reunion with Crystal Palace at the beginning of this month, the Eagles have gone on an impeccable run, tallying up three victories and scoring nine goals in total, including a monumental 5-1 over Leeds United last weekend, so it will be no easy feat for the travelling Merseysiders.

As a result, the return of Onana would be massively advantageous when the Toffees head to Selhurst Park this weekend and would be warmly welcomed by the supporters, manager and the team in their desperate pursuit of Premier League survival as Dyche could push Garner aside to cater for the Belgian's much-needed return to the starting XI.
