'That's why I'm here at 40 years old' – Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim aims brutal dig at Wayne Rooney in response to club legend's 'naive' jibe as Fulham dump Red Devils out of FA Cup

Ex-England captain Rooney was on punditry duty as United saw the defence of their FA Cup crown come to an end in a fifth-round penalty shootout defeat to Fulham. Amorim’s side are still chasing down success in the Europa League, but find themselves languishing 14th in the Premier League table.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite those struggles, Amorim has suggested that the long-term goal for the Red Devils is to savour domestic dominance once more – having previously captured 13 titles under legendary former coach Sir Alex Ferguson.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Rooney, who formed part of five title-winning squads during his record-breaking spell at Old Trafford, responded to that bold statement from United’s current coach by saying: "I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that."

    WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Amorim is paying little attention to any doubters and told reporters when being made aware of Rooney’s comments, with the Portuguese’s stock as a coach having soared in a short space of time: “That is the goal. Being naive is to think we are going to do it this season or be the best contender next season. So I know that at this moment everybody knows everything. I know that and it’s really easy – I was a pundit when I finished my career. I know it’s really easy.

“Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it is not with me. But our goal, as a club, the board, is to win the Premier League like we did in the past with all the great glories and legends of this club and we will want to do better and we are in a difficult moment. And I’m not naive, that’s why I’m here, at 40 years old, coaching Manchester United.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neymar saw a move to join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at MLS side Inter Miami speculated on, but has instead committed to an initial six-month deal at Santos. He made his first outing for them since 2013 when stepping off the bench in a 1-1 draw with Botafogo.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Neymar was included from the start in a meeting with Novorizontino, but contributed little across 75 minutes in a 0-0 stalemate. The 33-year-old playmaker completed only one of his eight dribbles, lost the ball on 24 occasions and failed to record a single shot on target.

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEYMAR?

Neymar’s successful passing figures also came in at just 79 per cent, with there clearly still rust for him to shake. Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer will be hoping to do just that over the coming weeks, as he heads down a path that leads to the 2026 World Cup, with a hero’s reception having been afforded him at Santos.

Not just Felix: 8/10 Chelsea star is proving he can be unstoppable

In Chelsea’s latest UEFA Conference League outing, it was FC Noah that faced their wrath, in an 8-0 thumping at Stamford Bridge.

In this game which bought goals galore, the Blues held 58% possession, took 31 shots (18 of which were on target), created 11 big chances and generated 5.80 xG.

Tosin Adarabioyo opened the scoring before Marc Guiu made it two less than a minute later. Axel Disasi made it three with a headed finish, with Joao Felix adding two more, alongside an absolute pearler from Mykhailo Mudryk, putting Chelsea 6-0 up at half-time.

The hosts added two more before the end of the game, with Christopher Nkunku grabbing both, getting himself on the scoresheet, and taking his overall tally to ten for the season, in just 16 appearances, and 686 minutes played.

But it was a man of the match display from Felix that stole the headlines, not only scoring a brace but also gracing Stamford Bridge with his usual tricks and flicks.

Joao Felix's performance in numbers

The 24-year-old attacker has found himself on the cusp of the Chelsea side, coming from the bench in Premier League games, and starting in cup competitions, making ten appearances since his arrival for the Blues, scoring five goals and providing one assist.

Felix was at the hub of creation for Chelsea on Thursday night, taking over the playmaking duties of Cole Palmer, completing five of his eight long passes, making two key passes, taking seven shots, completing five of his seven dribbles, and, of course, scoring his two goals.

But what the Portuguese did off the ball was just as impressive, ghosting between the lines to receive things, often being the out ball for Chelsea defenders, but also tracking back, working hard, and winning six of his nine ground duels, showing his willingness to fight for his teammates and regain possession.

That said, the performance of Mudryk, so often the outcast, so often the scapegoat, also caught the eye.

Mykhailo Mudryk's performance in numbers

The 23-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Blues in all competitions this season, and his wonderful goal last night takes him to a tally of two strikes and five assists for the season across 738 minutes.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

Much like Nkunku, the winger has found himself on the outskirts of the Premier League team, coming from the bench in those games and starting in the cup competitions. It’s hardly a surprise either with his performances under Mauricio Pochettino and indeed early on in Maresca’s reign described as “useless” by talkSPORT’s Andy Jacobs.

Therefore, his display against European minnows Noah certainly spoke volumes of how much he has improved under their new Italian manager to date.

The Ukrainian speedster was given an 8/10 match rating by Football.London, who praised his ‘genuinely unstoppable’ effort which was probably the best goal of the game. That certainly takes some doing in a match where the back of the net is rattled eight times.

Mudryk certainly dazzled, making as many as four key passes in the game, and deserved to be rewarded with an assist, to go alongside his goal.

But the Ukraine international also managed two successful dribbles of his four attempts and won three of his six ground duels, both areas Chelsea fans want him to improve upon, and provide consistency.

With Jadon Sancho currently out with an injury, the former Shakhtar man will be looking to break into the Premier League side for more minutes with just Pedro Neto ahead of him for the left-wing spot.

There is a possibility that Neto goes over to the right, replacing Noni Madueke, to get the Ukrainian in the side against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Man Utd can get Zirkzee firing by appointing "supreme" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United have been nothing short of appalling this season. Erik ten Hag’s side have won just four times, with two of those victories coming against the side who are second-bottom of the Premier League – Southampton – and League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Ten Hag’s position as Red Devils boss has come under question of late. His side are currently sitting in an astonishing 12th in the Premier League on just 11 points and a goal difference of minus two.

In the event Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS board decide to remove the Dutchman from his position, there have been several managers linked with the post at Old Trafford.

The managers who could replace Ten Hag

Perhaps the most obvious candidate for the United job if Ten Hag was to be sacked would be Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former United striker was brought back to the club by his country at the start of the season.

Given his experience as manager of PSV Eindhoven and his position as assistant manager at Old Trafford, he has been linked with the job in the event of the United hierarchy changing manager.

The man whom the Red Devils missed out on was former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel. The German was heavily linked with the post in the summer, and talks were believed to have taken place once again. However, the FA beat INEOS in the race, and Tuchel is now England’s boss.

Thomas Frank is another option that the United board are reportedly considering. He has done a superb job in charge of Brentford, both in the Premier League and Championship. His tactical flexibility is seen as a huge draw, and he recently said in a press conference that a new job might be the “challenge I need”. It is certainly something to keep an eye on.

There are certainly some viable options for the Red Devils, although there is one manager that could be good to turn down. That manager is Simone Inzgahi.

Why Inzaghi would be a good appointment

Inter boss Inzaghi has gone from strength to strength in Milan. According to multiple reports, including one from The Daily Star at the end of September, he is a ‘serious contender’ for the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager target Simone Inzaghi ahead of a Champions League game.

The Italian boasts a superb record at the helm of I Nerazzurri. So far during his time at the club, the 48-year-old has managed 169 games, getting 111 wins in that time, and suffering just 27 losses. It has been a very impressive tenure so far.

Inzaghi is a manager who favours a 3-5-2 system, placing great emphasis on his wingbacks to have a real licence to get forward and act as wingers when his side has the ball.

Playing this system, the Italian has masterminded some historic wins, although the best of the bunch may well have been the 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Milan.

Should the former attacker get the United job, United fans could finally see the best of striker Joshau Zirkzee. The Dutchman joined the club in the summer from Bologna for £36.5m, although he has just one goal to his name so far, a debut strike against Fulham.

United’s number 11 might well thrive under Inzaghi should he get the United job. The Dutchman, a self-professed 9.5, could excel in the Italian’s two-striker system. His game is built around dropping deep and linking up play, although that can leave the Red Devils short of a penalty box presence.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

However, playing in a two alongside the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, a more traditional striker who operates well inside the box, could see Zirkzee thrive. United get the best of both worlds, having one of the number nines dropping deep, pulling defenders with him to link up play and vacate space, whilst also having someone in the box to get on the end of chances.

That type of combination proved fruitful last term as Inter romped to the title, with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scoring 37 Serie A goals between them as a fearsome front two at San Siro.

The Italian manager’s system could manage to extract the best out of the young striker, something Ten Hag simply has not managed to do so far. Playing in a front two alongside Hojlund certainly gets the best out of him on paper.

Inzaghi, described as a “supreme” boss by football scout Antonio Mango, could be the ideal candidate to replace Ten Hag.

Not only is he an excellent tactician and motivator, but his system might get the best out of United’s forwards in a season where they have scored just seven Premier League goals.

Ten Hag must boldly drop Zirkzee and unleash Man Utd’s "exceptional" star

Manchester United’s recent uptick in form was halted by Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace over the weekend, as despite having the chances, Erik ten Hag’s side simply couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

However, unlike some of the draws last season, there shouldn’t be too much panic over the result, as the fact that the Red Devils were creating chances to begin with is an encouraging sign.

That said, with the club set to kick off their Europa League campaign against FC Twente tonight, Ten Hag should make some changes to his lineup, including one that could result in those chances being put in the back of the net.

Erik ten Hag

Why Ten Hag should drop Zirkzee

So, one of the players who should miss out on the starting lineup later today is former Bologna ace Joshua Zirkzee.

Now, in his short United career so far, the Dutchman has both impressed and frustrated fans, as, on the one hand, he’s shown some brilliant technical ability in attack and helped create a number of chances for his teammates, but on the other, he’s also snatched at and missed a fair few created for him.

It’s this duality in his game that led to the Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst awarding him a 6/10 for his display against Palace on Saturday, considering he played two key passes but missed a big chance himself in his 61 minutes of action; it’s a rating that seems entirely fair.

Now, there is certainly an argument to be made that the 23-year-old’s creativity outweighs his lack of ruthlessness, but Ten Hag needs a number nine who’s going to finish his chances, especially in this new Europa League format in which missteps at this stage can lead to more games down the line.

Overall, it appears Zirkzee will play an important role for United this season, but due to his workload and underwhelming finishing, he should be dropped for tonight’s game.

Why Rasmus Hojlund should start

Yes, it should probably come as no surprise that, with Zirkzee dropping to the bench, it should be Rasmus Hojlund who comes in to make his first start of the season.

The Danish marksman has been sidelined with a hamstring problem since late July, but now he’s seemingly fit again, Ten Hag has to get him involved in the first team and up to speed as soon as possible, and tonight’s home game represents the perfect opportunity to do so.

The former Atalanta ace endured a mixed start to life at the Theatre of Dreams last season, with his first Premier League goal not coming until Boxing Day, but considering the pressure on his shoulders from that £72m price tag and the fact he’s still only 21 years old, he looked impressive.

For example, in his 43 appearances for the Red Devils, the “exceptional talent”, as dubbed by Harry Maguire, scored 16 goals and provided two assists, meaning in his debut campaign for arguably the biggest club in England, he averaged a goal involvement every 2.38 games.

Moreover, his underlying numbers were also encouraging; according to Understat, the København-born gem scored his ten league goals from an expected goals figure of 9.34, lending credence to the idea of him being a clinical finisher.

Ultimately, Zirkzee hasn’t done too much wrong in a United shirt this season, but he is not a cold-blooded goalscorer. In contrast, Hojlund has shown a lot of promise in his time at the club, so he needs to start tonight to get him fit and firing for the next league fixture on the weekend.

Gary Neville claims 'insulting' Real Madrid offer resulted in dire Trent Alexander-Arnold performance against Man Utd – as Jamie Carragher accuses Liverpool defender of 'inviting' bid

Gary Neville says Trent Alexander-Arnold’s dire display for Liverpool against Manchester United was the result of an “insulting” bid from Real Madrid.

England international Alexander-Arnold has come in for fierce criticism on the back of his performance in a 2-2 draw with the Red Devils at Anfield, with Roy Keane claiming during that Premier League contest that the 26-year-old is more suited to Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers than La Liga giants Madrid.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United enjoyed plenty of success in the area of the field that Reds right-back Alexander-Arnold was supposed to be covering, with two assists provided from that flank, with the first a result of the England international giving the ball away. There have been claims that his eye has been taken off the ball by offers from Madrid during the January transfer window – as his contract at Liverpool runs down towards free agency.

  • WHAT NEVILLE SAID

United legend Neville told when assessing Alexander-Arnold’s abject display and the possible reasons for it: “The bid for Real Madrid is bad timing for him, now I don't know what's going to happen with Trent Alexander-Arnold whether he's going to leave Liverpool or not but if you've got that going into a big game, you're a local lad as well, that won't be easy with that distraction. Manchester United are an animal, I thought it was insulting from Real Madrid, they do that sometimes they think they can get what they want.

“Liverpool are a club of immense stature, they're never going to sell you Trent Alexander-Arnold for £20 million in January, they're taking the mickey a little bit. That's probably unnerved him a little, you can imagine his family, his agents, all saying, 'what's going on?' you can imagine that noise – which I don't think would've been helpful.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Neville went on to claim that fellow pundit and Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher believes that Alexander-Arnold’s representatives “invited the bid from Real Madrid”. Carragher responded to those comments by saying: “We're not naive enough to think Real Madrid would put a bid in for a player in January for a player for nothing in four months. Do you seriously believe they're sat at home and it comes through on Sky Sports, 'wow'. Of course they do.

“Because he's getting criticism that he might leave for free now if Real Madrid put a bid in in January and Liverpool don't accept, maybe they can say, 'well you were offered £30 million to £40 million', for me it was to buy a little bit of time if he goes for free, they can say Liverpool were offered £20m, £30m to £40m.”

Southampton could now miss out on £17m due to late concerns over transfer

Despite reaching an agreement over the potential sale of one their most expensive players, Southampton now reportedly face a nervous wait for FIFA approval and the £17m involved in the deal.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints endured a mixed summer transfer window. Whilst they welcomed added experience in the form of the returning Adam Lallana and gave Russell Martin the reunion he so desperately desired with Flynn Downes, their recent results suggest that they still needed further reinforcements.

Opening the campaign with three defeats from three and, as such, taking their place in the bottom three of the Premier League as the only newly promoted side without a point so far this season, not even fresh arrival Aaron Ramsdale could prevent his new side's most recent loss against a Brentford side in a clinical mood last time out.

Things may not get any better during the international break either, with those at St Mary's now facing a nervous wait over one particular sale. According to talkSPORT, Southampton are still awaiting FIFA's approval over their deal to loan Kamaldeen Sulemana to Ajax this season in a move that would include the option to buy at £17m.

The Dutch giants reportedly believe that they secured the deal before Monday's deadline in the Netherlands, but only time will tell whether FIFA deem that to be the case and the deal is ratified as a result.

Southampton forwardKamaldeen Sulemana.

Having signed Sulemana for a reported £22m back in 2023, it would represent quite the deal if Southampton managed to make back £17m next summer for a winger who has ultimately failed to make his mark at St Mary's.

Sulemana needs Ajax move

It would suit all parties if the deal went through and secured FIFA's approval. Ajax need a replacement for Steven Bergwijn, Sulemana needs a fresh start and Southampton would bite the Dutch giants' hands off to potentially receive £17m when all is said and done.

Things just never quite worked out for the 23-year-old at Southampton, even when the Saints dropped down the Championship just months after his arrival. For the £22m that they reportedly paid, the Saints would have been forgiven for expecting more when they dropped down to England's second tier, but Sulemana never found his feet under Martin.

The numbers paint a picture that the winger will want to forget as he sets his sights on a move to Ajax. It's there that he will hope to rediscover the form that once attracted Premier League attention whilst at Stade Rennais.

As things stand, however, all parties face a nervous wait for FIFA's approval. In Southampton and Sulemana's ideal world, of course, the Saints will bank £17m next summer and watch on as their once big-money signing becomes an Ajax player on a permanent basis.

Batting depth, spin twins Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja seal it for Chennai Super Kings

A batting order that stretches all the way down to No. 11 continues to mask the Chennai Super Kings’ flaws – two very glaring ones at least. But the rest of their team is functioning pretty well. Too well as it turned out for Rajasthan Royals, who collapsed in the middle overs in a chase of 189, and were beaten long before the match ended. The opener rising to the challenge
When Faf du Plessis walks out to bat, he knows he needs to score runs for two people, and he kinda seems okay with it.Jaydev Unadkat probably wasn’t. He was left utterly confused as he leaked two fours behind the wicket and two sixes in front of it.du Plessis’ innovation – he appears one of the few Super Kings batters willing to try unorthodox shots – helped them to 46 for 2 in the powerplay. And so long as he can do that, his under-fire partner has some room to breathe.Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t have a power game and in all three of his innings so far he has looked very out of place. The fading captain
There were so many times in the past that the arrival of MS Dhoni, with the score at 125 and six overs left in the game, would herald total destruction. Here he faced 17 of the last 37 balls of the innings and made 18 uncomfortable runs. A run a ball for half the deliveries at the death is just not ideal at all.The Royals deserve credit for that. They forced him to play spin, which he hates at the start of his innings, and their two left-arm quicks, Chetan Sakariya in particular, were brilliant with their changes of pace.So it’s not just that Dhoni’s powers are fading. His opponents know just what to do to make them fade. The end-overs rally
The Super Kings bat deep. And they just wouldn’t stop swinging. Sam Curran (13 off six) launched his second delivery for a jaw-dropping six over point. It is hard to reconcile his power and his frame. But he has it. And he uses it superbly.Dwayne Bravo (20* off eight) was on it too, starting off with a vintage loft over extra cover and signing off with a six straight down the ground. The amount of effort he was putting into clearing the boundary was apparent when one time when he tried the bat just flew out of his hand and went halfway to fine leg. Thanks to them, the Super Kings made 45 runs off the last three overs to finish with 188.The new Mr Super King
Last season he was their best hitter. And as a result of that the management is now giving him the chance to face more deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja walked out to bat in the 14th over tonight. And while he couldn’t reprise his big-hitting heroics from 2020, he has found his bowling groove again. An impossibly beautiful delivery that bowled Jos Buttler was ample proof of that.It pitched on middle and leg, at a spot and pace that didn’t allow the batter to push forward or back, and turned waspishly to strike the middle and off. Buttler was practically keeling over, his balance and his wicket both ripped out of his hands. That kickstarted a Royals collapse. Five wickets – two to Jadeja, three to Moeen Ali – for just eight runs. And here are the names that were part of that procession. Shivam Dube, David Miller, Chris Morris and Riyan Parag. All potential match-winners. All undone in the tamest way. The first two lbw playing across the line. The next two caught slogging to the deep. With Royals slipping from 87 for 2 to 95 for 7, their chase was, y’know… sad face emoji.

Why Tamim Iqbal was given not out against Kyle Jamieson

There was a moment of controversy in the 15th over of the second ODI between New Zealand and Bangladesh when Tamim Iqbal survived an appeal for caught-and-bowled off fast bowler Kyle Jamieson. The incident happened when Iqbal was on 34, and he struck a full ball straight back. Jamieson, 6 feet 8 inches tall, then dived forward in his followthrough to take a low catch with both hands on the ball before momentum sent him to the floor. The on-field umpires asked Iqbal to wait as they asked the TV umpire Chris Gaffaney to adjudicate if the catch was clean with a soft-signal of out.

Replays then showed that Jamieson had grabbed the catch cleanly but the issue was with his followthrough thereafter. When Jamieson fell forward, part of the ball – held firmly in his right hand – was grazing the pitch before he got up again to celebrate.Although Jamieson had no doubt he had dismissed Iqbal, celebrating with a big roar after the effort, it was Gaffaney’s opinion that the bowler was still not in total control of the catch when the ball grazed the pitch, and therefore Iqbal was not out.The key law was section 33.3 which states: “The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement.”It was the “complete control” over movement where Gaffaney ruled the catch would not count. The law is further explained on the MCC’s e-learning website. It says, “when players dive and catch the ball, they will not have complete control of their movement and the ball until they have landed and come to a complete stop.”When the screen at Hagley Oval displayed Gaffaney’s decision, Jamieson was displeased with it, throwing his hands in the air in disbelief. Iqbal would go on to reach his sixth fifty against New Zealand in the 25th over before falling for 78.
