Azeem Rafiq: Joe Root's comments about not seeing racism at Yorkshire were 'hurtful'

Azeem Rafiq has told a parliamentary inquiry he found Joe Root’s assertion that he never witnessed racism at Yorkshire as “hurtful”.Giving evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Select Committee hearing on Yorkshire’s investigation into Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism at the club, Rafiq was at pains to state that Root, the England Test captain, had never used racist language himself. But Rafiq said he found Root’s comments “strange” and an indication of how “normal” the use of such language was at the club.Root, a Yorkshire player since 2009, issued a statement last week calling for “change and actions” at the club to ensure “a culture that harnesses a diverse environment with trust across all communities”. Asked if he had seen any incidents of racism at the club, Root said: “Not that I can recall, no I can’t. But it is clear things have happened at the club and we have to make sure we eradicate it.”His comments followed an admission from Gary Ballance, the Yorkshire batter and Root’s former housemate, that he had used the slur “P**i”, which was deemed as “banter” in the club’s report into Rafiq’s claims.”To be clear, Root is a good man,” Rafiq told the hearing on Tuesday. “He’s never engaged in racist language. I found [his statement] hurtful, because Rooty was not only Gary’s housemate but, before he started playing for England, he was involved in a lot of those socialising nights out where I’d been called a P**i.”He might not remember it, but it just shows how normal it was in that environment, in that institution, that even a good man like him doesn’t see it for what it is. It was strange, but it’s the environment and the institution that made it such a norm that people don’t remember it. And it’s not going to affect Joe. It’s something I remember every day. But I don’t expect Joe to.”Addressing the DCMS committee, Rafiq doubled down on his criticism of Ballance, who had addressed the initial allegations by speaking of a deep and lasting friendship between the pair. This characterisation was inaccurate, Rafiq said, adding their relationship went downhill in 2013 and had become “toxic” by the time Ballance was named club captain in 2017.Asked by Julian Knight MP, the committee chair, about references to the word “Kevin” in the Yorkshire report, Rafiq explained that this was a derogatory word used by Ballance to describe non-white team-mates. “It was an open secret in the England dressing room,” he said. “Anyone who came across Gary would know that was a phrase he would use to describe people of colour.”Rafiq also alleged that Alex Hales, the former England batter, had been one of those players to pick up on the word, and even went so far as to name his dog ‘Kevin’ because it was black. “It’s disgusting how much of a joke it was,” Rafiq added.Related

Rafiq told Tuesday’s hearing that it was important for the inquiry not to focus on individuals, including the former Yorkshire and England captain, Michael Vaughan, who revealed in his column for that his name appeared in the report, where Rafiq alleged he had noted the inclusion of four players of Asian heritage in the Yorkshire side and said: “There are too many of you lot; we need to do something about it.”Vaughan denies those allegations, even though Rafiq’s recollections have since been corroborated by two of the Asian players who were present in the team, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Adil Rashid.”I think it’s important on Michael [Vaughan] that we don’t make it all about Michael,” Rafiq said. “It was a long time ago, Michael might not remember it as I said about earlier because it doesn’t mean anything. But three of us remember it.”He used his platform at the Daily Telegraph to tell everyone that he hadn’t said these things but then to go and put a snippet of my statement out and then talk about other things, I thought was completely wrong.”Azeem Rafiq gave a moving account of his experiences of racism to a parliamentary inquiry•Charlie Crowhurst/Getty Images

During his testimony, Rafiq revealed that as a 15-year-old playing for his local cricket club, he was pinned down in a car and had wine poured down his throat by another player.”The first instance of drinking, I actually got pinned down at my local cricket club and red wine got poured down my throat,” Rafiq said. “The player played for Yorkshire, played for Hampshire.”I didn’t touch alcohol until about 2012 and around that time I felt like I had to do that to fit in. I regret that, but it has no bearing on the things that I was called.”Rafiq also gave a moving account of the toll his experiences of racism, and subsequently speaking out about it had on him and his family, including his wife.”Do I believe I lost my career to racism? Yes I do,” Rafiq said. “Hopefully in five years time we’re gong to see a big change and I can look back at it that I did something that is far bigger than any runs I got or any wickets I got. But it’s horrible, it hurts.””We’ve got two young kids and they’ve not had a dad really because all I’ve been worried about is Yorkshire going out to discredit me and how I’m going to deal with it. Dealing with lawyers, dealing with press. [It’s been] challenging but I just hope today provides some sort of closure and I can treat her for what she deserves.”

Celtic wanted to sign Premier League ace but ended up getting Oh instead

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made changes to his playing squad during the recent summer transfer window and was backed by the board.

Central midfielder Matt O’Riley was sold to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion and the Hoops reacted by splashing out a club-record fee of £11m on Augsburg dynamo Arne Engels.

The Northern Irish head coach also brought in Paulo Bernardo, Adam Idah, Luke McCowan, Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, and Kasper Schmeichel on permanent deals, along with Alex Valle on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Celtic reportedly paid a fee of £8.5m, with a potential £1.5m in add-ons on top of that, to sign Idah on a permanent basis from Norwich City, after his loan spell at Parkhead last term.

The Ireland international scored eight goals in 15 appearances in the Scottish Premiership during the second half of last season, and has scored four goals in his last five games for the club in the current campaign.

His arrival in a £9.5m deal from the Canaries in the summer transfer window meant that Rodgers had him and Kyogo Furuhashi as his two first-choice centre-forward options, in a team that plays with one striker.

This left Hyeon-gyu Oh in a difficult place, sitting third in the pecking order at Parkhead, and he completed a move to Genk on a permanent deal.

Hyeon-gyu Oh's Celtic career

In January of last year, Ange Postecoglou swooped to sign the South Korea international from Suwon Bluewings for a reported fee of £2.5m to bolster his attacking options, shortly before Giorgos Giakoumakis departed for Atalanta United.

The promising youngster had scored 14 goals in 53 appearances for the K League 1 outfit, 11 of which had come in his 32 league outings during the 2022 campaign.

Oh enjoyed a promising start to life at Parkhead in the second half of that season, with seven goals in all competitions for the Australian head coach, including six goals in 16 matches in the Premiership.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Rodgers then arrvied to replace Postecoglou in the summer of 2023 and the South Korean youngster failed to break into the team on a regular basis.

He made 20 appearances and only started three times in the league for the Northern Irish head coach during the 2023/24 campaign, with Idah arriving to restrict his game time in January.

As you can see in the table above, Oh did manage to score five goals in his limited minutes on the pitch for the Hoops, but failed to offer any creativity for his teammates.

Despite his struggles for game time at Parkhead, the Scottish giants raked in a £2m profit for him in the summer just gone as Genk swooped in to pay a reported fee of £4.5m.

Things could have been very different for Celtic, though, if they had landed one of their alternative centre-forward targets during the January transfer window in 2023 – Antoine Semenyo.

Celtic's interest in Antoine Semenyo

Ahead of that window, the Bristol Post reported that Celtic and Rangers had both scouted the Bristol City forward ‘extensively’ ahead of a possible move for the young attacker.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

The Ghana international’s contract with the English Championship club was due to expire at the end of the season and that meant that they had to cash in then or they risked losing him for nothing in the summer.

That seemingly alerted the two Scottish giants to his potential availability but they were not the only teams interested in snapping up for the versatile attacker.

It was claimed that Premier League side Crystal Palace and Turkish outfit Fenerbahce were also keen on signing Semenyo ahead of the second half of the season.

In the end, however, none of those four clubs were able to win the race for the Bristol City striker. Instead, Premier League team Bournemouth splashed out a whopping fee of £9m, plus a potential £1.5m in add-ons on top of that, to secure his services on the 28th January.

It is not significantly more than the fee Celtic paid for Idah this year and it is a deal that the Hoops may now regret missing out on, given his form since making the move to the top-flight.

How much Antoine Semenyo is worth now

At the time of writing (09/10/2024), Transfermarkt has his current market value at €20m (£16.7m) and this shows that the Cherries were right to invest a large sum in his potential.

The initial fee of £9m that they paid Bristol City for his services currently looks like a bargain, given his market value, form, and the plaudits he is getting.

As you can hear in the clip above, pundit Jamie Redknapp believes that Bournemouth have unearthed an “absolute star” who is “worth a fortune” at this moment in time.

Semenyo did struggle in his first five months at the Vitality Stadium, however, with a return of one goal and zero assists in his first 11 Premier League outings.

The 24-year-old attacker, who can play through the middle or out wide as a winger, then found his feet and caught the eye with his contributions in his first full season in the top-flight.

As you can see in the table, Semenyo performed incredibly well against his xG tally, outscoring it by over three goals, and was unfortunate to end the season with two assists, from six ‘big chances’ created for his teammates.

The Ghana international has also made a strong start to the current campaign in the Premier League, with a return of three goals and two ‘big chances’ created in seven outings for the Cherries.

This means that the ex-Celtic target has recorded 11 goals and eight ‘big chances’ created in the league since the start of last season, which shows that he is more than capable at producing regular quality at that level.

Therefore, Semenyo is one that got away for the Hoops as they missed out on a high potential Premier League star in the making and signed Oh, who failed to make a name for himself in Glasgow.

His responsibilities include advising on global scouting, developing coaches, and contributing to the overall structure and success of Red Bull's soccer ventures.

During a media briefing on Tuesday, Klopp was asked if he would consider returning to coaching at one of Red Bull’s clubs should the opportunity arise. The German said: "I will not be the coach of a Red Bull team," he said.

"That is a clear commitment. But I can’t say I will never be a coach again in my life. I am probably the only person in this room who will be asked where are you in five years, I don't have a clue. But I will not be a replacement for one of the Red Bull coaches. I hope we can create a structure where these questions will not come up at all."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp’s position with Red Bull allows him to focus on overarching strategies rather than immediate match preparations.

"It's pretty much what I wanted to do. I finished seven months ago at Liverpool. I did that consciously," he said.

"A few months after that the opportunity came up. I don't want to be a passenger or a prominent person in the room. I really want to put some value on it. I did not want to do that [be a manager] anymore. I wanted to get a new start and this is an opportunity. To add value. How it will look we will see. There is not one plan that works for all teams. We want to be the best we can be. In each department, in each club."

Conte wanted Spurs to sign star now worth £62m but got Richarlison instead

Tottenham Hotspur are a club that have been blessed with a number of seriously talented players over the years.

The likes of Luka Modrić and Gareth Bale wowed fans in the early 2010s, Harry Kane broke through just a few years later, and Son Heung-min is now captaining the side and can still look incredibly dangerous at times.

However, the Lilywhites have also had their fair share of less successful signings over the years, and while there is still time to turn it around, Richarlison looks like he might be the club’s latest big-money flop.

Richarlison in anguish for Tottenham

What makes it worse is that just a few months before they signed the Brazilian, Antonio Conte was pushing the club to secure the services of a player who’s been on fire this season.

Richarlison's Spurs career

In June 2022, Tottenham spent a whopping £60m on Everton forward Richarlison, who had looked like a sensational talent for the Toffees over the last few years.

In all, the Brazilian attacker scored 53 goals and provided 13 assists in 152 appearances for the Merseysiders before moving down south, but unfortunately for the Lilywhites, his form did not follow him.

The 27-year-old’s first campaign in the capital saw him score just three goals and provide four assists in 25 appearances. While he did improve last year, racking up 12 goals and four assists in 31 games, it would be fair to say he has flattered to deceive so far.

However, while there is still time for him to improve, it does look like Postecoglou and Co have given up on him ever becoming the club’s starting number nine, as they splashed £65m on Dominic Solanke in the summer.

So, it’s hard to deny that when his fee and impact are taken into account, Richarlison’s move to Tottenham has been a failure, one made worse by the fact that a player the club tried to sign first is now tearing it up for a rival.

Spurs' failed pursuit of Luis Diaz

Yes, in the January transfer window, about six months before they signed Richarlison, Spurs were gunning to secure the services of Colombian international Luis Diaz.

According to an article from the Guardian at the time, Conte wanted to strengthen his team, and the then Porto star was one of the club’s key targets, so much so, in fact, that they made a £37.6m offer, which the club rejected.

Unfortunately for the North Londoners, this forced Liverpool into action, and just a few days later, they signed the tricky winger for an initial fee of £37.5m with £12.5m in further add-ons.

Since then, the 27-year-old dynamo has been through an awful lot on and off the pitch, and while there were some questions over his ability at points last season, he has started this year like a house on fire.

So far, the Barrancas-born star has scored five goals and provided one assist in just six games.

Unsurprisingly, such incredible form has seen his valuation soar as well, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at around €75m, which is about £62m.

Ultimately, while all clubs miss out on transfer targets, Diaz would have been sensational under Postecoglou, and while Richarlison could eventually prove to be worth his £60m fee, it feels like that ship has well and truly sailed now.

Chelsea join race to sign new 22-year-old as Todd Boehly readies £34m bid

Chelsea have joined the race to sign one defender with Blues chairman Todd Boehly reportedly ready to make a last-gasp £34 million bid.

Chelsea spend £271 million on 12 summer signings in busy window

The arrivals of Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman and Pedro Neto have brought Chelsea's spending for the summer to around £271 million (including their £51m move for Estevao).

Club chiefs think Chelsea will make late bid for £60m star after new talks

They’re convinced after a drop in asking price.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 29, 2024

It's been yet another show of BlueCo's willingness to spend big since their takeover of the club in 2022, and as they back their new head coach Enzo Maresca ahead of his crucial debut campaign in the Premier League, they've shown no sign of being done yet.

Chelsea have been in ongoing talks over a deal for Napoli star Victor Osimhen this week, as they attempt to add a new striker to Maresca's ranks before the transfer window cut-off point on August 31.

Deadline day looms tomorrow, and time is running out for the Blues to formally seal an agreement for the Nigerian, who is also being chased by Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, according to widespread reports in the last few days.

If a deal for Osimhen cannot be done this late in the day, there are alternatives, with Brentford striker Ivan Toney subject to a Chelsea approach earlier this week as they cast their eyes on multiple striking options for Maresca.

As Chelsea look to ship out Raheem Sterling in the final 48 hours of this transfer window, it is also believed that Jadon Sancho could come the other way in a swap deal, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

"Juventus and Chelsea remain both in talks for Jadon Sancho," wrote Romano on X last night.

"Juventus have improved their proposal today for loan with buy option, Man Utd insist on obligation and salary coverage also key point. Chelsea remain in active talks but still want swap with Raheem Sterling."

Chelsea ready late £34 million bid for Tomas Araujo

As per CNN Portugal journalist Nuno Farinha, despite Chelsea's desire for options up front, it is now possible they could look to bring in another defender as well.

Indeed, Farinha states, via Mais Futebol, that Chelsea have entered the race to sign Benfica centre-back Tomas Araujo, and are ready to offer £34 million to get a late deal over the line.

The 22-year-old made just 13 appearances for Benfica last season, but has impressed with an average match rating of 7.30 across three Primeira Liga starts for the Portuguese heavyweights so far this campaign, according to WhoScored.

West Ham move for £30m+ star on £400k-p/w would be "signing of the summer"

West Ham United could make the “signing of the summer” with a £33m deal for one target, according to former player Frank McAvennie.

West Ham transfer rumours

The Hammers have been looking to make their fourth summer signing for weeks now, with winger Luis Guilherme, experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Max Kilman already through the London Stadium door. Technical director Tim Steidten and new manager Julen Lopetegui haven’t had much luck, though, with moves for a number of targets falling through.

However, they appear to be making progress on a deal for Manchester United right-back Aaron-Wan Bissaka, with talks thought to be at an advanced stage for the 26-year-old.

The right-back has said “yes” to West Ham in a deal that could be worth up to £20m, whereas Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Fullkrug appears to be a concrete target in attack, with talks now advancing over a transfer.

With the focus now currently on Wan-Bissaka and Fullkrug, there has also been speculation about former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, currently at Al-Ittihad.

The Hammers had been in talks over a deal and even had an opening offer turned down by the Saudi Pro League side, with reports earlier this month suggesting that West Ham could return with an improved £33m bid for the Frenchman, and that prospect has got McAvennie very excited.

West Ham move for Kante would be "signing of the summer" – McAvennie

Talking to West Ham Zone in the last 48 hours regarding the possibility of Kante moving to West Ham, McAvennie described the midfielder as a “wonderful talent” who was “outstanding” at Euro 2024 and also said it “would be the signing of the summer”.

“Brilliant. It would be the best signing I’ve seen the club do for a while. I like him – he’s the kind of player we need. He just stops everything, it’d be great for West Ham.

“Kante for £33million? Bring him in. He’s a wonderful talent. At the Euros, he was outstanding, even despite playing in Saudi. It would be a dream for me. I’ve never seen him let down Chelsea or France. It would be the signing of the summer if we got him.”

The 33-year-old has plenty of experience in England with Leicester City and Chelsea and has made 227 appearances in the Premier League, lifting the league title in 2015/16 and 2016/17. He has been with Al-Ittihad for just over 12 months now, on £400,000-a-week, playing 44 games for his current employers, scoring four times and registering six assists.

It could be one to keep an eye on in the final weeks of the window, but for now, West Ham’s focus could be on finalising deals for Wan-Bissaka and Fullkrug.

Jake Doran's magnificent 98 leaves Victoria a challenging target

Jake Doran played arguably the innings of his career with a brilliantly complied 98 on a demanding pitch at the MCG to give Tasmania a good chance of victory having set a target of 253.Doran was the ninth man out, edging James Pattinson to slip, having faced 237 deliveries, only five of which were boundaries, on a surface that offered help for pace and spin. His effort, which followed a half-century in the first innings, enabled the last five wickets to add 147 before Victoria’s openers managed to get through a testing four overs.”Think that’s the best I’ve batted in first-class cricket so far,”: Doran said. “The toughest conditions and a good bowling attack. First innings it was your early sort of MCG wicket where it was nipping around then second innings you weren’t convinced if it was staying up, going low, nipping, a bit of everything.”In total, Tasmania fought their way to 199 further runs on the third day in 90 overs having resumed on 2 for 64. The match appeared to have tipped Victoria’s way when Mac Wright’s 129-ball stay ended with an edge to slip off Scott Boland who then claimed Caleb Jewell in the slips to leave Tasmania 4 for 90.Alex Doolan fell trying to attack Jon Holland, but Beau Webster (22) and Jarrod Freeman (30) provided valuable contributions alongside Doran as the lead slowly grew towards 200.A 47-run stand for the eighth wicket between Doran and Ellis then strengthened Tasmania’s position further before the last three wickets fell for five runs. Jake Fraser-McGurk held a stunning reflex grab at short leg to remove Ellis while last-man Peter Siddle, who has a damaged left thumb, edged a delivery from Holland that spat from the surface.Holland finished with 2 for 46 from 33 overs while Pattinson produced some unplayable deliveries among his 3 for 54.

Ipswich now leading race for “ridiculous” star, imagine him & Hutchinson

Ipswich Town fans will be equal measures of nervousness and excitement at this moment in time, as the new Premier League season continues to sneak up on the Tractor Boys day by day.

The nerves will come from the fact Kieran McKenna's men will be entering into the top-flight as major underdogs, with the worry they could be turned over for fun when facing off against the division's elite clubs.

Yet, Ipswich have thrived with this label above their heads before when back-to-back promotions were won unexpectedly.

Of course, the Premier League is a wildly different proposition altogether away from the challenges of the EFL, but the Suffolk outfit will hope they can stay up against the almighty odds stacked against them, with rumoured signings like these potentially helping in their mission to beat the drop.

Ipswich leading battle for Championship sharp shooter

Ipswich do now look to be leading the race to sign last season's Championship golden boot winner Sammie Szmodics this summer, with a new £8.5m bid reported to have been made by the newly promoted side.

That's the case according to football journalist Alan Nixon, with the hefty fee needed to tempt Szmodics away from Blackburn Rovers reportedly too much for Leeds United to cough up, who have also been credited as an interested party for the ex-Peterborough United attacker.

Sammie Szmodics

Therefore, Ipswich could now be in the driver's seat over ironing out a deal for the deadly sharpshooter, with a resignation almost from Riversiders boss John Eustace that a bumper switch will take place at some point this frantic transfer window.

Supporters packed into Portman Road next season will be licking their lips at the prospect of watching the decisive attacker pull on a Tractor Boys strip, even when making the perilous step up a league, knowing he could strike up a devastating duo bombing forward with another new recruit in the form of ex-Chelsea youngster Omari Hutchinson.

What Szmodics can offer Ipswich

As can be seen watching the goal clip above, Szmodics excelled running through on goal like a man possessed last campaign, before firing home with unerring coolness.

Szmodics would end up registering 27 goals in league action for a Blackburn side that were constantly looked over their shoulder at the relegation spots in the Championship, leading to so many suitors this summer wanting to snap him up to take him away from Ewood Park.

The agile 5 foot 6 attacker linking up with Hutchinson next season could see Ipswich catch the Premier League off-guard, therefore, with the former Chelsea winger helping himself to 15 goal contributions on the way to McKenna and Co winning automatic promotion away from Szmodics' exploits near the lower positions of the division.

Hutchinson's ten strikes whilst on loan came about despite the promising 20-year-old only amassing 5.22 xG overall too, with Szmodics also outperforming his own xG of 22.36.

Therefore, when Ipswich have limited opportunities to fire home a strike next season against some tough opponents, the likes of Szmodics and Hutchinson could come in handy, if they can translate their lethal displays in the Championship to a trickier league.

Described as being "ridiculous" by football journalist Josh Bunting during his golden boot winning campaign, the current Blackburn man feels worthy of testing himself in and around English football's big boys now, as McKenna continues to assemble what he believes to be a team that can compete and potentially even stay up.
