Five epic batsman-bowler duels

Rivalries that defined eras and gave for unforgettable contests between bat and ball

Mohammad Isam12-Jun-2020Viv Richards v Dennis Lillee
In the 1970s and 80s, the West Indies-Australia contest was the pinnacle of cricket, and Lillee and Richards were its main protagonists. In the first series they played against each other, in 1975, Lillee, who had recovered from a career-threatening spine injury the previous year, took 27 wickets in a 5-1 home win for Australia. He dismissed the 23-year-old Richards five times, but on three of those occasions Richards had already past 50.In 1977, both players signed for Kerry Packer’s World Series of Cricket – the duel between them was marketed as one of the key plots of the rebel tournament. They had some of their best contests there, with Lillee dismissing Richards eight times. They were back playing international cricket by 1979, and Richards began to dominate the contest, scoring 386 runs at 96.50 in West Indies’ 2-1 away series victory in Australia in 1979-80, with Lillee dismissing him just twice. Lillee’s big moment against his rival came in the MCG Boxing Day Test of 1981, when he bowled Richards late on the first evening of what turned out to be a close match. Lillee got his career-best figures of 7-83 in that same innings, and the Richards dismissal was the iconic moment from it.Overall, Richards won the contest, averaging 48.73 in Tests featuring Lillee, though he was also dismissed nine times by him in Tests, more than by any other bowler. In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, Richards said Lillee was the one opponent who kept him up at night.Steve Waugh v Wasim Akram
In the 13 Tests he played against Akram, Waugh was dismissed four times by him. In their most thrilling battle, however, Waugh survived some of Akram’s fiercest bowling, showing his legendary toughness. In the 1994 Rawalpindi Test, Akram was presented with a green pitch and decided to test Waugh’s well-documented vulnerability against the short ball.”It was the quickest, meanest [spell] I’d ever seen,” Waugh wrote of Akram’s barrage in his autobiography, . “Wasim either didn’t like me or I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nothing was in my half of the wicket and it was all genuinely quick, the ball leaping off the pitch with spite and venom.”Waugh hopped about but, crucially, survived, and got 98 before playing on against Waqar Younis. The effort earned him Akram’s respect. “He didn’t middle a ball in my spell – I was beating him, and he was leaving a lot of balls,” Akram told the . “But he stood there and got 98 and that was very, very impressive. I just wanted to kill him, as a bowler. That was probably the quickest I’ve ever bowled.”Gotcha! While the much anticipated Tendulkar vs Shane Warne contest ended up being a bit one-sided, the Tendulkar v McGrath battle produced memorable moments and became the one that defined India-Australia matches of the 1990s and early 2000s.McGrath dismissed Tendulkar in their first meeting, in Sharjah in 1994, but two years later, Tendulkar hit his rival for some big shots, including a famous six over midwicket, during his 90 against Australia in the 1996 World Cup. In a must-win game at the 1999 World Cup, Tendulkar was dismissed by McGrath for a duck, which was seen as the final blow to India’s campaign.Things really heated up on India’s 1999-2000 tour of Australia. In Adelaide, umpire Daryl Harper infamously gave Tendulkar out lbw when hit on the shoulder while trying to duck under a Mcgrath bouncer that didn’t get up. In Melbourne, Tendulkar played McGrath cautiously while attacking the other bowlers on his way to 116 and 52. But in Sydney, both attacked, and in an epic over, Tendulkar took consecutive pulled boundaries off McGrath and then, when the bowler went fuller, drove him down the ground. McGrath responded by dismissing Tendulkar lbw off the last ball of the over with an inswinger.Another memorable contest ensued a year later, in Nairobi, in the first ICC KnockOut, which would later become the Champions Trophy. Tendulkar was in a belligerent mood, getting 33 runs off 30 balls from McGrath, including a six down the ground and one over midwicket. Most surprisingly, Tendulkar, apparently, sledged his opponent. He admitted as much in later interviews, saying he had done it to put McGrath off his game. “That’s one of the games I remember where I didn’t say a word at all. He was the one sledging me,” McGrath told ESPNcricinfo in an interview in 2005.McGrath had the big moments in the second half of the rivalry, dismissing Tendulkar in Test wins in Mumbai (2001) and Nagpur (2004) and in the first over of India’s chase in the 2003 World Cup final. In all, he got Tendulkar six times in Tests and seven times in ODIs.Brian Lara v Muttiah Muralitharan
Ahead of West Indies’ 2001 tour of Sri Lanka, Brian Lara’s Test average had dipped below 50. He responded by preparing harder than ever for the tour. Muralitharan had just gone past 350 wickets. He had tormented some of the world’s best batsmen, particularly on home pitches. Lara amassed 688 runs at 114.66 in the series and was dismissed just twice by Muralitharan. It was a staggering tally considering just one other West Indies batsman got more than 200 runs in the series as they were beaten 3-0. Muralitharan took 24 wickets, with two ten-wicket hauls, but could not unsettle Lara.Lara credited Sir Garry Sobers for his improved technique and said they key was avoiding cross-batted shots like the sweep and watching the ball from the spinner’s hand. Muralitharan has always maintained that Lara was the batsman who played him best.Ricky Ponting v Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff to Ponting, over number 13, fourth innings, Edgbaston, 2005 Ashes, third session on day three, Test match on the line – one of the most memorable overs in modern cricket history. With Australia chasing 282 to make it 2-0 in the series, Flintoff dismissed Justin Langer off the second ball of his first over of the innings to make it 47 for 1. Ponting walked in, and Flintoff, bowling at above 90mph, rapped him on the pads, then took a thick inside edge, before hitting the pads again. With one ball left in the over, he bowled one wide of off, and the umpire called a no-ball. The seventh ball was a fast outswinger, angling in and then straightening late. Ponting stabbed, nicked, and walked off for a duck. One of the best batsmen of his era, with a Test average of more than 58, had been worked over. That was in the second Test the two played against each other, and the rivalry continued for the next four years. Ponting fell to Flintoff again in the fifth Test in 2005 and succumbed to him twice during the ICC Super Tests later in the year. But he turned the tables when Flintoff toured Australia as captain in 2006-07. Ponting scored 576 runs at 82.28 and was out just once to Flintoff as Australia won 5-0. Two years later, in his final Test, the decider of the 2009 Ashes, Flintoff ran Ponting out with a direct hit from mid-on to seal the series for England.

'Unacceptable' – Mikel Arteta reveals his concern following Arsenal's 'rollercoaster' last-gasp win over Wolves

Mikel Arteta slammed Arsenal’s display as "unacceptable" after a chaotic late win over bottom-placed Wolves, admitting his title-chasing side made life far harder than necessary before scraping a stoppage-time victory through a second own goal. While the dramatic finish preserved Arsenal’s lead at the top, Arteta warned that the lapses that nearly cost them points cannot continue.

  • Arsenal scrape away with 2-1 win after two own goals

Arsenal survived a dramatic finale at Emirates Stadium Saturday afternoon as they edged Wolves 2-1 thanks to a pair of own goals, capped off by a stoppage-time winner from Yerson Mosquera.

Bukayo Saka’s inswinging corner created the opener when Sam Johnstone pushed the ball onto the post and watched helplessly as it bounced off his back and into the net. That should have set Arsenal on course for a routine finish, yet the match quickly descended into tension and disorder as Wolves exploited growing nerves.

Mateus Mane’s late cross found Tolu Arokodare in the 90th minute, and his header levelled the contest as Arsenal’s defensive organisation evaporated. Fans feared the worst, knowing a draw would allow Manchester City the chance to cut the gap at the top to two points if they won the following day. But Arsenal were gifted salvation deep into added time when Saka delivered again, this time with a curling ball that Mosquera inadvertently headed past his own goalkeeper.

Even with the relief of victory, the night delivered an unwelcome setback as Ben White limped off with a hamstring problem after just half an hour. Arsenal’s defensive concerns have mounted in recent weeks, and White’s injury further complicates selection as the games intensify. Despite the three points, the performance left Arteta deeply unimpressed, framing the win as fortunate rather than deserved.

    Arteta labels Arsenal's performance 'unacceptable'

Arteta made his feelings clear after the match, insisting that Arsenal’s display fell below the standards required of a team with title ambitions. "It was a relief, but we have a very clear understanding that the margins should have been bigger," he said. "We generated more chances in the second half, but after that we had a period of two or three minutes in deep, totally passive, with horrible defensive habits that are nowhere near the levels required."

Arteta also criticised the nature of Wolves’ equalizer, expressing frustration with how easily the visitors scored their only meaningful opportunity. "The first time they had an opportunity to score they did," he reflected. "We should have stopped the shots before, and that is on us."

Later on, Arteta summed up the chaotic evening in blunt terms. "It was a rollercoaster," he said. "The longer the game went on, they had hope and we had to accelerate our game and take more risks. We did find a way and that's a very positive thing, if not we'd be very frustrated and rightly so, but there are things to improve obviously."

  • Arsenal suffer drop in form amid injury crisis

Arsenal’s victory preserved a five-point lead over Man City, but the performance raised major questions, particularly regarding defensive discipline and composure under pressure. Wolves had taken only two points all season, yet repeatedly unsettled Arsenal with direct balls into the box during the closing stages. The reliance on late fortune, rather than control, was a worrying echo of recent performances where lapses have exposed an increasingly fragile back line.

The defensive issues were exacerbated by the sight of White limping off. Already missing Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera, and Riccardo Calafiori, Arsenal can ill afford further losses during a demanding stretch of the season. William Saliba’s return from an ankle injury provided some stability, but Arteta has been forced into constant reshuffling as the squad absorbs additional knocks.

Even as they sit atop the Premier League, Arsenal have struggled to match the defensive solidity that defined earlier unbeaten runs. Arteta has warned of a "dangerous circle" with players pushed into heavy workloads, and Saturday’s chaotic finale supported his concerns. While resilience and late goals have carried them through moments of difficulty, the reliance on narrow margins poses a significant risk as their rivals intensify their pursuit.

Arsenal looking to gather steam after short break

Arsenal now turn their attention to a challenging December run, beginning with a trip to Everton. The temporary pause should offer Arteta and his medical team a valuable chance to assess White’s condition and recalibrate a defence stretched by injury and inconsistency. Yet with a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace and league clashes against Brighton and Aston Villa looming, the demands will quickly surge again.

Arteta will hope that returning players can stabilise the squad, particularly in central defence, where repeated absences have forced constant tactical adjustments. Much will also depend on how the team responds mentally to a performance the manager openly criticised; finding a balance between grinding out results and re-establishing control will be crucial. Arsenal’s ability to respond quickly may determine whether they can maintain their grip on first place into the new year.

'Barcelona fans would love him!' – Bruno Fernandes backed for shock La Liga transfer amid positional restrictions at Man Utd

A former Barcelona midfielder has urged Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes to join the Catalan giants amid positional restrictions under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. The Portugal international has been deployed in a restricted role at the centre of the park alongside Casemiro in Amorim's starting lineup this season, instead of playing a part in a more attacking area of the pitch.

Fernandes' change in role at Man Utd

Fernandes was the only shining light at United's worst campaign in the Premier League's history last season. The Portuguese midfielder was the team's best performer and highest scorer with 19 goals and as many assists in 57 matches across all competitions.

Despite a stellar campaign, Amorim decided to experiment with Fernandes' role in the team as in the current campaign, he has been placed in a two-man central midfield role alongside Casemiro. With the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the summer and Mason Mount's revival, Fernandes has been forced to play in a more defensive position this season, mostly in a 3-4-2-1 system.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFernandes told to join Barcelona

Speaking to , former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta said: "Look at Ilkay Gundogan. He came to Barca also in his thirties, so in terms of age, not too much to worry about if Bruno Fernandes wants the move. Talent-wise, he has all the time that he needs for a player to succeed in La Liga. It's obviously about how he feels about it. He's obviously the captain at Man Utd. Maybe the fact that he's not playing in a position where he would prefer could influence him. I cannot see why he couldn’t go to La Liga, to Barca, especially.

"Again, I think players love those challenges, different countries, different leagues, winning trophies in different leagues, and I'm sure it crossed his mind many times. But again, it's about ambition, it's about his situation there. In the same way I would love to see Vinicius Junior in the Premier League, I would love to see Fernandes in La Liga. Barcelona fans would love him, 100%. His character, both talent-wise and personality-wise."

Fernandes linked with move to Saudi league

Saudi Pro League clubs have shown interest in Fernandes for a long time now, although interest in the midfielder was fended off in the last window, with United’s club captain making no push for an exit from Old Trafford. He is tied to a contract through to 2027 that includes the option for a further 12-month extension.

Amid his transfer links to the Middle East, United have been told that they should not ignore any transfer offers from the Saudi Pro League. Former Red Devils star Wes Brown – speaking in association with – told GOAL: "I think he will be. Regardless of what happens with Bruno, I know that he would really love to stay. At the same time, if stupid offers get brought in, what can you do? He’s getting to that age now where he still wants to be part of it, but you can’t just dismiss everything because that’s not how the world works. I don’t think anyone would take it too personally if that did happen.

"He’s done everything he can to try and help the team. At some point it will come to that crunch if someone comes in – probably talking Saudi with that money. If that happens again, whatever happens you can’t blame Bruno. You have to accept that he did right by what he needed to do and then move on again. You need a player with that same energy. That’s what people don’t get – the same energy. Sometimes my mates say ‘he does this, he does that’, which is because sometimes nobody else is doing anything! He’s trying to do something. People don’t understand that and get it, which is fine. But he is definitely a player that you need, or need someone like that. Not necessarily to replace, but in the same category. If he was to go, it would be a big miss."

Getty Images SportAmorim's update on Fernandes' injury

The 31-year-old suffered a late injury scare during United's comeback victory over Crystal Palace last weekend. However, Amorim eased concerns after the game, as he told TNT Sports: "It was a kick. I was shouting at him, we made a substitution in the end. He needed to talk to the bench but he said it was just a kick so everything is okay."

Fernandes is likely to return to action in the club's upcoming Premier League game against West Ham on Thursday at Old Trafford.

Slot can ease Wirtz blow by unleashing Liverpool’s “Divock Origi regen”

Those of a Liverpool persuasion are no doubt braced for the imminent return to action, with Arne Slot’s struggling champions hosting Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

It’s been anything but plain sailing for the Reds this season, and with only three points gained from their past six outings in the top flight, title-defending aspirations have devolved into fears that the Reds will miss out on Champions League qualification for only the second time in a decade.

Last season was nearly flawless until Slot’s champions eased standards toward the final stretch, save for Forest’s shock win at Anfield early in the campaign.

Liverpool will need to be at their best to ensure Sean Dyche does not heap more misery on his side. Set-pieces and long balls have been among the cruxes of this issue-ridden campaign, after all.

And they will have to make do without the creativity of Florian Wirtz, who has been ruled out with a muscle injury sustained with Germany.

The latest on Florian Wirtz's fitness

Wirtz is ruled out this weekend, having checked in after international action with a muscular problem. Conor Bradley is also sidelined, and for a longer period than the 22-year-old. However, Alisson Becker could make his anticipated return from injury.

Wirtz has been at the epicentre of Liverpool’s struggles this season, routinely hounded for his tough integration period after completing a £116m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in July. The playmaker has yet to score across 16 matches in all competitions, and he has not registered an assist in the Premier League.

Though he struggled during the defeat at Manchester City two weeks ago, Wirtz has shown signs of progress in recent games, and his creativity will be sorely missed against a resilient Forest backline whose low block and resilience under pressure will prove a tough nut to crack at Anfield – last season bears testament to that.

While Cody Gakpo will fancy a return to the starting line-up in Wirtz’s stead, Slot may want to consider a more dynamic option for this one.

And Slot may have just the solution in Liverpool’s new version of Divock Origi.

Slot must unleash Liverpool's new Origi

Origi has achieved cult status at Liverpool. The Belgian striker only scored 41 goals across 175 appearances for the outfit, but his catalogue of big-game moments is something to behold.

His goal in the 2019 Champions League final over Tottenham Hotspur immortalised him on Merseyside.

Divock Origi scores in the Champions League final

Now, Liverpool find themselves enjoying the skill of a new version in Federico Chiesa, who has been unable to nail down a starting role in Slot’s team since completing a £12.5m transfer from Juventus in 2024.

Chiesa toiled through his first year in England, but he’s played a bigger role since the summer, having notched two goals and three assists across all competitions this season. He has played 12 times, yet only two of those appearances have come from the opening whistle.

In the words of reporter Lewis Oldham, “Chiesa has undoubtedly been a flop for Liverpool”, but he’s simultaneously emerged as a “Divock Origi regen” in that he is a rare trump card off the bench and a popular figure besides.

Because for all the hardship Chiesa has been through since joining Liverpool, he has enjoyed some big moments in red. It was the 28-year-old who bagged a consolation in the Carabao Cup final, and he ensured Slot’s side made it a winning start to the current campaign after restoring Liverpool’s lead over Bournemouth back in August.

Chiesa’s wizardry on the ball and natural striker’s instinct could see him slot right into Wirtz’s berth, playing off the left and drifting centrally to accommodate Liverpool’s tactical flow.

Given that the Italian has also won 55% of his ground duels and averaged 0.8 tackles per Premier League fixture this term in spite of not having started a game, he might even be an apt fit for the physical battle that comes with a clash against the Tricky Trees.

Liverpool cannot afford another slip-up at the moment and must secure three points against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Given that Chiesa has been among the most coherent and dangerous forwards in Liverpool’s squad, surely it is time he earns a rare starting role in the big league?

Premier League return for Christian Pulisic? Man Utd one of two clubs considering transfer bid for USMNT star as AC Milan contract extension remains unsigned

Manchester United are reportedly keen on bringing ex-Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic back to the Premier League. Aston Villa are also being credited with interest in the USMNT star, who has been catching the eye for AC Milan. Another transfer for the American could be agreed in 2026 as the offer of a contract extension at San Siro remains unsigned.

Personal bests posted by Pulisic with Serie A giants

Pulisic moved to Italy in 2023, with a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge being brought to a close. He enjoyed success in England, registering a Premier League hat-trick and becoming a Champions League winner. Regular starts were, however, hard to come by at times.

With that in mind, a fresh start was embraced when Milan came calling. Personal bests on the goal front have been posted with the Rossoneri, with that individual bar being raised to 17 efforts last season.

There was talk early in 2025 of Pulisic being considered by Liverpool as a possible successor to Mohamed Salah – prior to the Egyptian superstar signing a new contract at Anfield. United are also said to have had him on their radar at various intervals.

AdvertisementGettyWhy Man Utd & Aston Villa want Pulisic

According to , the Red Devils are mulling over an approach once more. It is claimed that United want Pulisic to form part of a “revamped attack”, as they target more “creative and game-changing players” and build a squad that can “strengthen their aspirations for European tournaments”.

Villa, meanwhile, are said to view Pulisic as an “ideal option”. They see him offering “speed, dribbling skills, and the ability to play both centrally and on the wings”. The United States international is considered to “represent a significant step up in quality” for the Villans’ attack.

Part of the problem for any potential suitor is that Milan remain reluctant sellers. They have Pulisic tied to a deal through to 2027, that includes the option for a 12-month extension. They are looking to put fresh terms in place, with an offer having sat on the table for several months.

That proposal would deliver a significant wage increase, but the likes of United and Villa would have no problem digging that deep either. A recent update on Pulisic’s contract stance stated: “The situation hasn’t really evolved yet: it’s a stand-by phase. Milan don’t have a renewal meeting scheduled, but it will certainly be an issue they’ll want to discuss. For now, however, it remains on hold, and there’s no contact between the parties.”

Pulisic transfer advice from former USMNT star

Pulisic was said to have initially delayed discussions with Milan as he wants to be sure that they are heading in the right direction after missing out on qualification for European competition last season.

With doubts seemingly in his mind, the 27-year-old has been advised to keep his options open. Fellow American Brad Friedel told GOAL recently of Pulisic potentially bidding farewell to Milan: “It’s a huge club that is underperforming. I know he did well last season, but they finished eighth. If AC Milan are finishing in eighth, that means people are losing their jobs – which did happen last year.

“If I was advising him, I would be looking at teams in Europe and seeing what’s happening at AC Milan, for sure. I would make sure, especially in World Cup year, that my client is playing. He is playing, so that’s the best thing. But I think I would have an eye open somewhere else.”

GettyStay or go? Pulisic facing huge future call

A return to the Premier League could make a lot of sense. He already knows the division and is a better player now than he was when severing ties with Chelsea. Pulisic has become more of a leader with club and country, as he lives up to his ‘Captain America’ nickname.

He has, however, become a fan favourite at San Siro and is held in the highest regard by club bosses. No indication has been offered that he is looking for a move elsewhere – with golf pro girlfriend Alexa Melton paying regular visits to Italy – but clubs of United’s stature are notoriously difficult to turn down, even with their recent struggles for consistency taken into account.

'Outstanding' Foulkes savours record debut performance

New Zealand stand-in captain Mitchell Santner was all praise for Zakary Foulkes, who bagged the best figures for a New Zealand bowler on Test debut. Foulkes, one of three debutants in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, picked up match figures of 9 for 75 as New Zealand eased to a record-breaking innings win on the third afternoon.”We’ve seen a little bit in the white ball stuff recently, but to do it in a Test match on debut is pretty special,” Santner said of Foulkes’ feat. “He was obviously going for that ten-for, I think he bowled a ten-over spell there, which is credit to him as well to be able to bowl ten overs in a row. But he’s probably loved Zimbabwe more than some others.”Foulkes was added to the squad after Nathan Smith was ruled out due to an abdominal strain he suffered in the first Test. Foulkes, who has played one ODI and 13 T20Is, can swing the ball away and into the right-handers, which, according to Santner, is a rare quality.Related

“Someone kind of swinging into the right-hander is, you don’t see that often,” Santner said. “So I guess [he’s] another addition to our attack with the guys moving the ball away. “He was outstanding. When the lefties come on, he looks pretty tough to play and to get nine in the game on debut is a pretty good effort.”Foulkes has mostly been playing white-ball cricket recently, and while his debut felt a “little bit rushed”, he explained how he adapted to the red-ball grind.”It still hasn’t really kicked in to be honest,” Foulkes said after his nine-for. “It’s all happened pretty quickly. It was awesome to be out there with the guys.”It was all a little bit rushed. I’ve been on a white-ball diet so the prospect of bowling a few more overs and stuff, I definitely felt a bit sore on day two. Thankfully, we didn’t have to bowl on day two, which was nice. It was cool to get back into red-ball cricket.”While Foulkes was the star of the second Test, fellow debutants Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher also did their bit. Duffy collected two wickets and scored handy runs as a nightwatcher at No. 3 while Fisher steamed in and claimed two wickets. The trio complemented Matt Henry well, who finished with 7 for 56 for the game and was named Player of the Series.Matt Henry was named player of the series•Zimbabwe Cricket

“It’s been really cool,” Foulkes said. “Duff’s [Duffy] sort of taken me under his wing, which is nice. We’ve played a little bit together for the BlackCaps, which is cool. And then Fisher, yeah, it’s awesome to see what he’s done in the last few years. He was bowling pretty quick in the nets the other day, which wasn’t too nice. But it was awesome to see both those guys get a crack and do so well.”Growing up, it was always Matt Henry, Trent Boult, Tim Southee. It’s awesome to be sharing the pitch with them now. I’ve played a handful of games with them for Canterbury and a lot of trainings and stuff. So it’s awesome to be a part of this team with them.”While New Zealand posted big wins in both matches, Santner felt Zimbabwe put them under pressure on the bowling-friendly surfaces. He also heaped praise on the four-pronged pace attack for making light work of Zimbabwe in both innings.”We were challenged at times throughout the game and I guess we kind of got through those periods and we cashed in,” Santner said. “The way we bowled, especially in the first innings, it was probably a little bit there, but to get Zimbabwe for 120 [125] in that first innings and then we could really cash in with the bat.”The score looks like it was a very one-sided affair, but throughout this game, even the first, there were periods where we were under pressure, Zimbabwe were on top. If you can kind of weather those storms and kind of get through it, you’ll put yourself in a better position.”The last time we were here in 2016, I remember it [pitches] being a lot flatter, a little bit slow and kind of a lot of hard work to get wickets. I think the first Test was potentially a little bit soft underfoot and it really did a lot. Then this Test, our bowlers were able to extract a little bit of seam movement and a bit of swing which made it pretty tough.”The way they were able to kind of hang and hang on a length for a long time made it challenging for the Zim batters for sure.”

Bigger talent than VDV: Spurs have "one of the most exciting teenage CBs"

Micky Van de Ven’s addition back in the summer of 2023 raised eyebrows among many Tottenham Hotspur supporters, especially after the hierarchy forked out £40m for his signature.

Such a fee was a hefty one during the Daniel Levy era, but it may have come as more of a surprise given the Dutchman was largely an unknown quantity to many of the fans.

However, just over a couple of years on from his move, he’s cemented himself as a key member of Thomas Frank’s squad – arguably being one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Despite his defensive role, the 24-year-old has had a huge impact within attacking areas, netting three times in the Premier League this season – putting him joint top of the Lilywhites’ goalscoring charts.

It’s not all been plain sailing for the club within the defensive department, with numerous other big-money additions unable to live up to the hefty fees paid for their services.

Spurs’ issues at centre-back for Van de Ven’s arrival

Spending big on centre-backs hasn’t been alien to Spurs in recent years, as seen by their £42m addition of Davinson Sanchez back in the summer of 2017 – a then club-record transfer.

The Colombian racked up over 200 appearances for the Lilywhites over a six-year period, subsequently leaving in the summer of 2023 to join Turkish side Galatasaray.

He was a solid option under various managers in North London, but ultimately, the fanbase were left disappointed – especially after paying a club-record fee for his signature.

Joe Rodon was another youngster signed by the hierarchy to potentially grow into an elite-level centre back, subsequently paying Swansea City £11m back in the summer of 2020.

However, the Welshman would only make 15 Premier League appearances for the club, before being sold to Leeds United as part of the Archie Gray deal in 2024.

It’s safe to say with Van de Ven, times have changed in North London, but the club have already unearthed another top-level talent who could be a real hit with the fans in the years to come.

The Spurs star who’s a bigger talent than Van de Ven

Whilst he’s been battling with injuries over the last few months, Van de Ven’s importance to the Spurs side simply cannot be understated – with Frank’s men a much better side with the Dutchman at the back.

He’s already helped the Lilywhites keep seven clean sheets across all competitions, with the 24-year-old evidently having a huge impact at both ends of the pitch.

The defender has also demonstrated his strength in another area, with the former Wolfsburg man registering the fastest speed of any player in England’s top-flight throughout 2024/25.

At present, he’s currently partnered by Cristian Romero at the heart of the backline, but that could be about to change in the years ahead, given the emergence of Luka Vuskovic.

The Lilywhites forked out a reported fee in the region of £12m for the signature of teenage sensation from Hajduk Split, with real hope he can be a first team starter in the near future.

The Croatian has spent a couple of years out on loan, with his spell on loan at Westerlo catching the eye – but for his attacking quality rather than his talent at the back – just like Van de Ven.

He scored seven times and notched two assists in his 36 outings, a simply staggering feat for a young defender, which earned him another loan move – this time to Bundesliga side, Hamburg.

The prospect of top-flight German football may have seemed like a huge jump to many, but the 18-year-old has wasted no time in impressing the supporters of Die Rothosen.

Vuskovic, who’s been labelled “one of the most exciting teenage centre-backs” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has already opened his account for the German side in 2025/26.

However, his defensive stats are just as impressive, with the youngster winning a staggering 10.2 duels per 90 – 7.5 of which have been in the air – subsequently achieving a success rate of 87%.

He’s also completed 100% of the dribbles he’s attempted, whilst completing a total of 84% of his passes – showcasing his incredible all-round game despite his tender age.

It’s very rare you come across such a dominant young centre-back, but it’s clear Vuskovic has all the tools needed to be a monster hit with the Lilywhites fanbase in the years to come.

Should he stay on his current path, there’s no reason why he can’t emulate Van de Ven’s success in North London and even surpass the Dutchman’s recent levels.

Pep already sold Man City's next Rodri & he's "better" than Declan Rice

Manchester City are not what they were, but they are still good enough to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

No side have scored more goals in the top flight so far than Pep Guardiola’s lot (15), and they sit just three points behind leaders Arsenal.

This is a young and developing side, but City have one of the strongest spines in Europe, with Erling Haaland well beyond scoring goals for fun and Gianluigi Donnarumma bringing a new brand of shot-stopping between the sticks.

However, the linchpin in the middle, Rodri, has suffered injury complications this year after missing the bulk of the 2024/25 campaign due to injury

The latest on Rodri's fitness

Rodri is one of the best footballers in the world, and he has been the glue at the heart of Guardiola’s genius for so many years.

It was no coincidence that the wheels came off with the Spanish star sidelined last year, and Guardiola grudgingly confirmed he would be unavailable this weekend, City hosting Everton in the Premier League, and perhaps for a while longer.

The 29-year-old confirmed he felt something in his hamstring during the narrow win at Brentford before the international break, lasting only 22 minutes at the Gtech.

With Nico Gonzalez yet to click into gear after joining the Citizens from Porto for £50m in February, Guardiola will need to come up with a solution.

He will, of course, but this frustrating fitness saga draws us back to a time when the club parted with a young holding midfielder who could have been the perfect understudy.

Pep already sold Man City's Rodri replacement

Manchester City have one of the most efficient and respected youth academies in the world, with so many young prospects spending time cutting their teeth with the Elite Squad.

And among those to have parted with the Mancunians before earning a shot in Guardiola’s senior set-up was Douglas Luiz, who joined Aston Villa for £15m in 2019. The Brazil international was a monstrous presence in the Midlands, instrumental in Villa’s rise to European competition.

Now 27, Luiz left the Premier League for Juventus and returned after two years this summer, signing for Nottingham Forest.

Impressive on the ball, combative and a leader of men, the robust midfielder has the complete package, and that’s something that has set Rodri apart over the years.

Luiz has struggled for form and indeed minutes at the City Ground this season, but he has proven his ability to stand out in the Premier League before, and was certainly playing at a level suitable for a squad like City.

It’s within his ability, with the Brazilian even being described as being “better” than Declan Rice during those final days with Aston Villa by former Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant.

This might seem somewhat ridiculous now, but Luiz really has hit the highest level of performance in the Premier League before, and that’s without having been inculcated into Guardiola’s tactical sphere.

Just imagine the partnership that could have been forged.

Of course, Rodri’s brilliance has eased any need for an elite number six across most of the Ballon d’Or-winning Spaniard’s career in England, but now, with the world-class superstar struggling, a player like Luiz could have been a difference-maker over the past 12 months.

Beaumont ton in Blaze chase hands Hampshire first defeat

A superb century from England’s Tammy Beaumont led The Blaze to a seven-wicket victory with 13.1 overs to spare as Hampshire’s unbeaten start to the Metro Bank One-Day Cup women’s competition ended at Trent Bridge.Beaumont finished 112 not out after sharing an unbroken 159-run partnership with Georgia Elwiss (58 not out) to complete a third win from four matches for the East Midlands side.Another of their England stars, legspinner Sarah Glenn, took 3 for 36 as Hampshire were restricted to 189 in their 50 overs, opener Ella McCaughan top-scoring with 57.Hampshire had two wins and a tie in their opening three fixtures, setting a record for the highest successful run chase in women’s List A cricket in England when they overhauled Lancashire’s 292 for 6 at Southport last week.Winning the toss and batting first here on a used pitch, they looked well placed to continue in that form at 41 for one after the opening 10-over powerplay, even though they had lost opener Maia Bouchier in the 10th over, the England batter chopping on as she reached for a wide delivery from left-arm seamer Grace Ballinger.Yet that early momentum was lost, home skipper Beaumont’s decision to toss the ball to Glenn at that point paying off as the England leggie not only stemmed the flow of runs but took three key wickets, bowling her 10-over allocation in a single spell from the Radcliffe Road end.Employing the old-fashioned virtue of bowling at the stumps, Glenn dismissed Charli Knott and Rhianna Southby, both bowled making room to cut, either side of Georgia Adams falling leg before, trying to work to leg. It left Hampshire with work to do at 91 for four from 25 overs. They soon suffered another blow as McCaughan, who had completed a third consecutive half-century after her career-best unbeaten 133 against Lancashire, played loosely at a ball with which Josie Groves, The Blaze’s second legspinner, found turn and bounce and gave a simple catch to backward point.Charley Phillips, the 21-year-old former Sunrisers seamer, had Abi Norgrove caught at deep square leg and Nancy Harman beaten for pace to finish with two for 50, before Freya Davies (25 not out) and Poppy Tulloch (18 not out) combined in the best partnership of the innings, adding 46 in the final 10.4 overs of the Hampshire innings. It felt like a below par total, but putting runs on the board proved equally difficult for the home side as Freya Davies and Lauren Bell restricted them to 31 for two in the powerplay, taking a wicket apiece as Amy Jones failed to clear Bell at mid-off off the former before a poor shot from Kathryn Bryce off Bell gave backward point an easy catch. When Sarah Bryce pulled Bell to be caught behind square, The Blaze were 33 for 3.Yet Beaumont and Elwiss were able to bring their experience to bear in negotiating Hampshire’s attempts to frustrate them, coming through 10 overs of spin before upping the tempo to take the total to 106 for three from 25, Beaumont pulling Poppy Tulloch for consecutive fours to leave The Blaze needing another 84.Beaumont’s half-century came from 73 balls with four boundaries, Elwiss reaching the milestone from 10 fewer deliveries, also with a quartet of fours, after which Beaumont began to look for a quick finish, advancing into the 90s with a towering six over long-on off Davies and a four into the same area, pulling Bell for a 10th four in the next over before a scrambled single took her to a 15th career hundred in List A cricket from 110 balls. And it was Beaumont who finished the job with her 11th boundary to get the job done after a partnership with Elwiss that could not have been better paced.
